Tropf-Blumat

The Blumat Tropf-System is a plant irrigation system with all the desired features – it is “intelligent”, because it recognizes the needs of the plants and only waters when dry. The system is also very plant friendly, due to slow irrigation, always with standing water, and, in addition, very economical, because the irrigation takes places selectively, which is generally enough for the plants, instead of wetting the entire soil.
The repeatedly observed abundant growth with plentiful flowering is the result of the uniform and regular supply of water, which cannot be achieved by hand. Plus, the control of the irrigation is very natural and not digital, because the system works using the soil tension. This is the natural force which holds water in the soil or makes it available so that roots are able to absorb it, and is also responsible for turning the watering “on and off”. The Blumat-System therefore operates without electrical energy and without the use of automats – a much welcomed development.

Tropf-Blumat is the smart system that helps plants to take care of themselves

The spotlight is on the heart of the system, the “Tropf-Blumat” as dripper element with a watering nozzle as a valve and each unit with an integrated moisture sensor in the form of a clay cone. The clay cone is filled with water – only for the sensor function! The water for the plants comes from the drip tubing, which is pinched closed in the watering nozzle or opened to release water. The Tropf-Blumat needs some support to function properly, since the valve requires a minimum pressure. Additionally, the suggested adjustments for compensating for various pressure levels, as well as adjusting for the varying moisture requirement of differing plants, are a part of proper operation. Only seldom are plants that love dryness, not tolerant of constant moisture.
The set-up of the system is very simple: the 8 mm water supply hose is connected to the water source and takes over the task of suppling water, branching off from this base are the 3 mm “drip tubing” which each lead to a Tropf-Blumat that is located next to the plants. Two Tropf-Blumat sizes, the matching fittings and further accessories allows for a very adaptable set-up that can be easily changed at any time.

Function of the Tropf-Blumat

This is how it works exactly: The Tropf-Blumat is filled with water. This water has a control function rather than a watering function. When the soil gets dry, the Tropf-Blumat emits some water into the ground.  In this way, a sub-pressure is created inside the clay cone and the valve opens, releasing water. When the soil is wet enough, then the water is sucked back into the clay cone of the Tropf-Blumat and the valve closes itself. It’s a simple physical principle, but also highly effective and reliable for many years.

The uses are manifold: the ideal example is the classic use for all plantings in pots, tubs, troughs or boxes, especially suited since other methods prove to have a harder time with these planting options. The watering of balcony boxes was the original use and is still a central focus for Tropf-Blumat, however, as the use of balconies has changed becoming more diverse - so have the balcony plantings evolved with balcony boxes planted with vegetables, big buckets with tomatoes or the “green Wall” with hanging planted elements. Unfortunately, in this case supplying water with the necessary pressure is often problematic – Blumat Classic may be just the help needed.
Fans of tub planters can be found using Tropf-Blumat on patios or in gardens around their houses, here the larger Tropf-Blumat Maxi is much appreciated. These fans know the differing moisture needs for example of Oleander, Olive, Palm or Citrus and appreciate the ability to consider these differences when adjusting the settings. The Maxi is also suitable for the watering needs of all plants standing separately in a bed, be it tomatoes and peppers in a greenhouse or solitary plants in the sun room.
Not to forget: special cultivations, such as raised beds in which sowed rows with closely spaced plants can be irrigated over extra dripper lines from the Tropf-Blumat. Or, for example, cultivation in shallow planters, such as used for the high art of bonsai cultivation. There is even a special Tropf-Blumat “Bonsai”, which has a fitting small clay corpus as a sensor. Another example is the Tropf-Blumat “Matte” with a wide base for standing on a fleece mat in an irrigation tray or dish in a green house, providing grow pots or starter plugs with water via capillary action from below. – Tropf-Blumat, a specialist!
